VINNIE PAZ’S TOP 5 PRODUCERS ARTICLE

It feels like yesterday that I wrote my “Top 5 MC’s” article.” After some research, I realized it was 2 years ago. Time flies. This time, I asked some of my friends and contemporaries to name the best producers ever. I feel like these lists represent a more realistic representation of who the best are, because this list is made up of artists, not bitter critics and failed musicians. Thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to build with the kid. Enjoy.

5. The Bomb Squad – the Shocklee’s and crew floored the hip-hop universe from the first note of “Public Enemy #1,” and kept their foot on your throat with buckets of samples and one of the hardest production styles ever!

4. Sir George Martin – ever heard of The Beatles? Outside of Lennon and McCartney, it’s because of him. His arrangements alone took the Fab Four from great, to legendary.

3. Dr. Dre – if you need this explained to you, tie the noose, put ya’ head in and jump off the chair!

2. Phil Spector – his “wall of sound” changed the game dating back to the 60′s and his work with folks like The Ronettes, The Beatles, Ike & Tina, the Righteous Brothers and others will forever stand the test of time.

1. Rick Rubin – whether or not he’s “in the room” enough, is up for debate, but bottom line – Rick not only changes the sonics, but more importantly, culture. Beastie Boys, Slayer, RUN DMC, Johnny Cash, Danzig… Unprecedented!

R.A. the Rugged Man MC/Journalist/Filmmaker (@RAtheRuggedMan)

LARRY SMITH: This is your favorite producers favorite producer, from icons like DJ Premiere to basically any producer who knows the history. I’m positive if you asked Dr. Dre or Timberland or any of the biggest names about Larry Smith’s work they would all agree he is one of the GOAT’s. He is the man behind the Golden Era’s greatest HipHop records from Run DMC to Whodini to the Fat Boys to Kurtis Blow. Even producers who may not know Larry Smith’s name have been influenced heavily by what Larry Smith has contributed to HipHop music.

45 KING: Is the champ, underrated King. He was the backbone behind the entire Flavor Unit which was one of the most lethal crews of MC’s ever. He also helped blow up Queen Latifah and Naughty by Nature commercially and also kept it underground by producing some of the greatest HipHop records in history like Chill Rob G’s ‘Court is in Session’, Lakim Shabazz ‘All True and Living’, Markie Fresh ‘The Mac of Rap’ and then later in his career he ended up producing smash hits like Hard Knock life for Jay-Z and Stan for Eminem.

TEDDY RILEY: Teddy is probably my favorite producer of all time. He was a musical prodigy out of Harlem at 16 who helped produce one of the greatest beats ever ‘The Show’ for Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick, the biggest records in the legendary Kool Moe Dee’s career and some of the biggest records in the Legendary Heavy D’s career too. He worked with a prime Big Daddy Kane and also produced HipHop smashes like Rap’s new Generation for classical two. He’s best known for producing some of the biggest hits ever recorded for Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, Blackstreet, etc. Not to mention the first GUY album is my favorite album of all time. But because he is associated with big R&B records his name doesn’t come up as much as it should in HipHop discussions.

MARLEY MARL: The entire Juice Crew catalog, Kane, Kool G-Rap, Masta Ace, Mc Shan, Tragedy, Roxane Shante… He resurrected LL COOL J’s career and help blow up a prime untouchable Rakim, Marley is a KING.

PAUL C: some of HipHop’s most legendary producers from Large Professor and Pete Rock were both students of PAUL C, He influenced countless iconic HipHop producers. the production and mixing on Critical Beatdown is some of the most influential in HipHop history. Paul’s production on Super Lpver Cee and Casanova Rud’s album is some of the best in history as well from HipHop’s Golden Era. Way ahead of his time with beat making and EQ’ing drums like no other. He was shot and killed at the young age of 24 thats why we didn’t get to hear more form him.

Vinnie Paz
